WHY HEADHSHOTS ARE IMPORTANT FOR VOICE OVER ACTORS
Being a voice over professional, your voice provide much more than clear diction and the ability to convey information clearly. It provides the listener with an impression of your character and personality too. For a casting director, a headshot provides visual cues. It is your virtual 'handshake' and from a personal branding perspective very useful for promoting your talent on social media, websites and even in related printed communications. A professional headshot to promote your talent as a voice over talent indicates you are a professional and care passionately about what you do best.
Voice Over Actors who are not comfortable in front of the camera may prefer to keep life simple, by using an emoji that reflect who they are as an individual. It is understandable the concern that a headshot may take away from your vocal performance. You may prefer for your voice to do 'all the talking'.
Casting directors may differ in their approach when selecting a voice over talent. They may desire to see a picture of the actor to validate their perceptions, perhaps on ethnicity, or social representation, ensuring representation or association with the audience they are targetting. Other casting directors may prefer to make their decision by using their imagination and the sensory response from just the voice alone. People make a more personal connection with faces and facial characteristics. A logo or avatar narrows your option. Voice Over Actors have had comments during the hiring selection such as ' Oh, you sound much older, younger etc, when actually meeting a casting director for the first time for a role.
Eventually, you will find that you will need a headshot for your personal website on an "About Me Page". Find a photographer who will understand you, your personality and your goals to get the best headshot that represent you.
